Wicked at Gershwin Theatre

Stephen Schartz’s genius and talent breach generation gaps, from beloved Disney films to pure Broadway magic. The hit-making virtuoso who brought Godspell and Pippin to the world has now breathed life into smash-hit Wicked, which comes to Gershwin Theatre for the spring playbill. 

Wicked cleverly weaves bureaucratic criticisms, unconventional heroes, and improbable love within a medley of catchy tracks, including Defying Gravity, which has taken Broadway by storm.

Snopsis

The tale follows Elphaba, the adulterine daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her familial and identity struggles, Elphaba makes it into the highly regarded Shiz University, where she rooms with social butterfly Galinda. The two polar opposites hardly get along at first but soon befriend. 

Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse when Elphaba notices nefarious crimes against the Animals, a sentient race often targeted by persecution. Galinda and Elphaba seek the Wizard for help, but the Wizard disappointingly offers little assistance. A unsatisfied Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for justice for the Animals, leaving everything else behind. 

Meanwhile, Galinda climbs the social ladder, marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an socialite lifestyle. Elphaba accidently earns Fiyero’s heart as he falls in love with her and her values. Will the couple’s love blossom unburdened, or will Elphaba’s agenda push Fiyero away, distance her from friends, and ruin her?

Production

Wicked kicked off its first debut 20 years ago at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. As its influence spread, it made its way into new locations year after year, achieving international acclaim with performances in London, Ireland, Mexico, Germany, and even Australia. Its capacity to bring in audiences also inspired Hollywood producers to release a two-part motion picture based on the Broadway show, that hit cinemas in November 2024.

Wicked collected numerous awards during its prime in the 2000s, including 2 Drama Desk Awards, three Tony awards, and a Grammy award for Best Musical Theater Album. The cast and crew performing at Gershwin Theatre on Saturday 24th May 2025 promise to deliver a fantastic performance.
